This works for me with an old 7.4 version: gvim -u NONE -N --noplugin --cmd ":set encoding=utf8" c:\Users\cbrabandt\Documents\all.reg this one doesn't: gvim -u NONE -N --noplugin c:\Users\cbrabandt\Documents\all.reg Also note, you probably need :set fencs=ucs-bom which should be the default.
