I'm using gvim, as I have for many years, for long-lived editing sessions. I recently upgraded to ubuntu 17.04 which brought along an upgrade to Vim 8.0.
I have noticed that gvim gets slower and slower with use, and it doesn't seem to require very much use for it to be, in my opinion, unusably slow. I am not sure that I have discovered the cause of this, because reproducing it is not trivial. What I have discovered is that if I open my .vimrc (about 400 lines) and just hold down j, if the font is set to `Terminus 14` I the redrawing of the screen is noticeably slower than other fonts I've tried (Inconsolata, Bitstream Monotype.)
