Maybe you can set v:searchforward before invoking SetSearchPattern() (?):
nnoremap <expr><silent> =* ':<C-U>'. SetupSearchPatCmd(). '<CR>g@'

return "set operatorfunc=SetSearchPattern|let v:searchforward = 1"
endfunc
