I pasted this code from the wiki page linked to by Rob Foehl in his answer above; in that same wiki page you'll find escape sequences for various kinds of terminal emulators. What I haven't found is how to fashion a well-thought-of conditional statement to change the cursor shape the right way in various incompatible terminals while using a single vimrc.
