Hi Ian, The GTK doc page renders fine for me in both Firefox and vimprobable2 (both 1.2 and 1.3).
The fonts on gmail are also clear. I am using Arch GNU/Linux - I tried the local file with both proxy on and proxy off (I use privoxy normally) and had no issues with either. I don't have any special settings in vimprobablerc other than set escapeinput=true and set proxy=true. I may have missed it in your other email, what distro are you using?
