WOW! It's hard to believe the design team thought the 520 was ugly. I
think the 520 is a rather nice design. I have a 578 and prefer it over my
5400. . It's still an all-in-one like the Mac compacts but has a little
bit bigger screen, color, and built-in cd-rom. I also like the speakers
in front and the volume controls. The 5400 I have is just huge and doesn't
seem to have a personality like the LC 578. Of course this is coming
from a guy who likes the looks of the Imac G4.

Re: LC520 free for the cost of shipping

He's welcomed to the ugliest Mac of them all! ;-)

Seriously, the 520 began its life as a design exploration project
following the completion of the Color Classic, to make a larger
screened AIO Mac with a built-in CD-ROM, before anyone asked for it.
Apple's Industrial Design Group (IDg) could not come up with a design
anybody liked, so they took the final prototype (which everybody
hated) and stuck it on a shelf never to see the light of day again.
However, Sculley saw the finished Color Classic and declared the
screen was too small. As part of his marketing strategy, he demanded a
large screen AIO Mac be readied for market within 6 months. To meet
the deadline, the engineering department literally took the 520 off
the shelf and put it into production over the objections of the
designers. So outraged and embarrassed by the release of their failed
design prototype, they immediately began a re-design which would
become the 5200.

Just thought you'd want to know the background of what its designers
considered the worst example of their work. As far as I know, IDg
never before or after allowed a design to be brought to market that
they did not officially approve.
