Hello all. I am (finally) getting around to going through my old macs. One desire I have is to save all the programs and data files to a single repository so I can go through and categorize them at a later time. I want to do this before the drives start to fail and everything is lost forever.
I am transferring the files (via appletalk) from old machines (Plus through Quicksilver and just about everything in between) to my newest (quad G5). I am guessing a total of 2 dozen or so computers. So far I have transferred from a few Quadras, a 6100 and my 8600 (around 16 GB so far). Once I dig out my old monitors I can get to work on some of the older machines. So here is my question... Are there any issues or concerns about file / data integrity when doing this? Are the resource forks going to get stripped away in the process? Any other "gotchas" I should be aware of (we are talking about 15+ years of technology difference here)? The G5 drive is HFS+, so I am thinking I am safe... but hopefully somebody else has some experience with this sort of thing. Long term I think I will move everything to magneto-optical storage, but short term I will keep a couple copies on different drives for safety (the G5 is running a striped array... not too safe - but fast!). I must say, it has been quite a pleasure bringing some of these old systems back up again... I forgot how fast some of them are! My 8600 (originally a 300MHz 604e with a NewerTech G4 upgrade) running a 4 drive wide SCSI striped array, Voodoo5-5500 video card... Can you say perky? Many of my machines are max'd out and it really makes a difference. Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated.
