I went away from Moto-based Macs long ago, but "back in the day" when
I was dedicated to Moto Macs, I owned quite a few, and experimented
with most of them.

The 040s, based upon my experiments, would usually "speed bump" one
step.

25 could to to 33.

33 could go to 40.

40 could go to 50.

Etcetera.

On most models, the oscillator is in a DIP package, and I desoldered
it and installed a special "crystal" socket.

The oscillator was usually 2 times the CPU's clock speed, meaning 66
MHz for a 33 MHz processor, etcetera.

One problem with the 040 line was the PPC PDS processor upgrades.

Apple's would speed bump OK, but Sonnet's would not.
