The text file you get when you use a pre HFS+ system to view an HFS+ disk is a read-only teach text document named (or something to the effect of) "Where did all my files go?". I don't know about "Open Me", but can look at some of my old mags and such this weekend... or at least try... Never enough time it seems. I would guess that you are correct about it being some sort of security protection layer... Probably uses a custom disk driver to prevent access (and likely performs some rudimentary encryption). Have you looked at the disk partitioning? The extended partition information may reveal some additional clues.
