because a 2.8 megahertz 16-bit desktop system and a 4 megahertz 8-bit portable would not have carried Apple into the 1990s, even if they were developed further than they were with Macintosh eclipsing them. that, and the very expensive Lisa which i think would have hurt Apple more than it would have helped.
