Because the Apple AAUI Transceiver doesn't have the auto-negotiation problem and Asante devices do.

Asante is the only brand I've run into the problem with.
Better 10/100 hubs/switches/routers can handle that, but some rely solely on the NICs in the computers properly using media identification. The solution is to get any 10 megabit hub and daisy chain it between your old Mac and your 10/100 box.
