To maintain a constant rate of speed under the drive head, the motor speeds up toward the inner tracks, and slows down toward the outer tracks. An 800k disk has 80 tracks per side, and these 80 tracks are grouped into 5 bunches of 16, thus 5 unique motor speeds. This is information which I read just last night from the Apple Technical Introduction to the Macintosh Family ©1987. Good thing, huh?
