i came to the same conclusion as what you say in your message.
those macs can't be upgraded from 9.0

That is why i still look for an EXACT copy of the 9.1 CD as my
original one have a scratch and do not work.

There was a specific problem with OS 9.1 and NuBus PowerMacs. It's been to long for me to remember the details. Best I can recall is that you couldn't run the updater on 9.0.4 to go to 9.1 on these machines. You either had to do a 9.1 install or do the update on another type of machine. I sure of this with regard to 6100s as we had 50 of them to do and I did the first.

5400 and 550s are PCi so they don't apply.  I'm not sure about the PB1400.
