What causes preference files going bad ?
Incorrect values get written into the file. Caused by:
1) Bad programming.
2) Improper memory cache flushes.
...The above two are entirely preventable, if the app and OS
developers would just get off their a** and think about their own
designs for a few minutes.
3) Data loss due to things like power failures or less commonly RAM
or bus or HD failures..
If you have an app that seems to corrupt its prefs often, the easiest
thing to do is to identify the preference file(s) involved and make a
backup copy of them. When a problem occurs, just restore the prefs
from your copy. I do this often with certain apps. Just open your
Preferences folder, select the item, and hit cmd-D --- make the copy
right there. This method totally avoids having to re-set all the
preferences, or worse - having to find some long registration
number...
