I washed my Classic II logic board last night. My machine started doing the checkerboard thing and after no luck with the usual stuff (install new PRAM battery, reseat chips, clean RAM contacts) I decided to try washing the board after reading a bunch of stuff about it online.
It was the weirdest thing to put that board under water but I can tell you first hand that it worked for me. I actually tried using a toothbrush first, specifically focusing on the areas around the leaky capacitors. I could see the goo and I thought I got rid of it all but the machine still booted with the checkerboard problem so I decided to try washing it. I simply filled my sink with warm water and 1 drop of dishwasher soap. I probably only had it under water for 1 minute, although it felt like 3 hours. I removed the PRAM battery, RAM and another 4 chips then put it under the soapy water and swished it around. Using my finger I rubbed the entire board especially the areas around the capacitors. Then I took it out, shook off as much water as possible, towel dried it and left it on it's side over a paper towel. I think they say to let it dry for a week but I couldn't stand waiting so I decided to take my chances 24 hours later. Like I said, it's working perfectly now and I'm a happy camper but I can't guarantee it will work for everyone. I was actually surprised it would work. I don't understand how all those electronics survive after being submersed under water. Anyway I don't expect this to last forever because those capacitors will eventually leak again, it's just a matter of time. My long term solution is to replace the capacitors but I'm going to enjoy it for a while before I tackle that. :) On May 3, 8:39 pm, Papa Bear <[email protected]> wrote: > I need to clean up some logic boards and I have read you can wash them > in the dishwasher.
