The portable essentially has its own built in uninterruptible power supply.

There have been many methods over the years for replacing the original, rather 
delicate, lead acid battery with different types that can withstand deeper 
drawdown (draining the original too far will damage it) and/or provide a longer 
runtime. I dunno if anyone has hacked a lithium-ion battery into a Portable. 
Could shave a lot of weight off while keeping a runtime similar to the 
original, or go for maximum runtime by using as large a Li-Ion pack as will fit.

There are also ways to de-poratablize it by eliminating the battery to use it 
only on AC power.

There were cable kits to install normal SCSI hard drives into the Portable, but 
these days you'll have to find one surplus or secondhand, or figure out a way
