The problem of the Macintosh IIsi is that the built-in graphics card was meant to work with proprietary Apple displays (12 to 14"). Each of those monitors had a fixed resolution. For example, a 12" monitor was fixed at 640 x 480, a 14" monitor at 864 x 642. The monitor uses 'sensing pins' to tell the Macintosh what resolution it can handle. Since they're fixed, your stuck with just one resolution.
I have had the same experience with a IIci, which worked fine with the monitor belonging to my LCIII, but didn't work with the 14" that came with my Power Macintosh 8500. It chimed and booted, but never displayed any image. I suspect that the monitor that does work on the IIsi is just a 'lucky hit'. And the above mentioned is the reason why you can't switch resolution: the IIsi mistakes it for a 12" display. The best way around it is to try and find out if you can use the DIP- switches on the adapter to fool the IIsi into thinking it's dealing with a straight forward 640x480 monitor. Mine is capable of that, although it might not work for yours. Another way around it is to find a NuBus video card (SuperMac/Radius). These usually accept a wide variety of monitors and produce an image of extraordinary quality on LCD! Greetings, Eelco.
