General inspection (leaking caps.) vacuum out 'dust bunnies', etc.

Okay, just opened it up and unplugged the cd drive then re inserted it.
Anything else I should do before I put the case back on?

Johnny,

I went into the system profiler and found the cd drive that is installed is a DVD-R/DVD-RAM/CD-RW drive. But the only startup disk is the hard drive.

Best is to open System Info and check what CD/DVD drive is installed.

CD/DVD drives do not show up on disk utility unless media is in it.

His drive didn't show up in the disk utility. It is either bad, or a
cable came unseated. I suppose there could be an issue with the
motherboard, or disk controller, but let's not think about that.

I never used 10.1, but doesn't it have a Startup Disk thing in the control panels that you can use to have it default to starting from
the system disk? I don't see if you tried that or not.

Open the cd/dvd drive door w/ your finger. copy the computer info listed

it will look like

700 mhz 40 gig hd 512 meg CDrom
                        dvd
                        Combo

what I'm looking for is the last item above. If you have a cdrom drive
a dvd won't work in it. The early eMacs shipped w/ cdroms.
