Just wanted to share what I discovered via much searching and trying... I
pulled out my old Motorola Starmax 4000 for my daughter to play games on
and plugged it in and pressed the startup button and nothing. Had a vague
memory of replacing a battery once when trying to do the same thing years
ago, so I started googling. Near as I could figure, the PRAM battery was
dead. I could order a new one here:
http://www.batteryforall.com/for~Alkaline--Battery--Modules_All--vendor_Memory--Batteries-view-part-3LF22.htm
 but
I wanted to get it running today, not in a week once it shipped... so I
continued searching...

Long story short, what I found was that I could plug in, remove cover,
press CUDA switch to reset corrupted PRAM (found in the the upper left side
of the board, looks like a little black button on a silver square) and
voila, startup! I know, for long run situations, I should probably replace
the battery, but for my purposes - occasional playing of kids games and a
bit of nostalgia as I navigate 8.6 - this solution works great. :)

Hope this helps someone else!
