Here on this old, but not quite as old 8500 I use "Stuffit Expander" which just does the right thing for files dropped on its icon. The fork file is probably the resource fork that goes with the data fork to make a single file in the Mac world of old. macbin or macbinary was a way to include the two forks and some finder information from the directory structure in a single file for transport. There were also stuffed files that were self extracting.
