That is essentially what I did for mine, although I put the battery in the
original 'box'.  I epoxied the contacts to the upper lid.  I crimped wires
to the contacts and have blade connectors on the ends of the wires, which
are connected to the battery.  I just used packing tape to wrap it and keep
the lid on the main shell.
