I've got one word for you, Jeff: capacitors.

If your Mac is old enough to drink, it needs to be recapped. Even if you don't 
see any evident leakage, it still needs to be recapped. Many video, power and 
random error issues are a manifestation of dry capacitors.

So, I'd suggest getting comfy with your soldering station or making buddies 
with someone who is.
