It's been a while, but last night I tried installing System 7.5.3, from the 16 floppies, onto what we USED to call a Classic Mac. (Classics were B&W all-in-ones, Vintage were Macs requiring an external screen).
You realize your floppies, however carefully you preserve them, get unreadable over time, or the machine you use to read them has a stiff/dust-balled/worn out floppy drive. So then you do end-arounds. I have a 6500 with a good CD ROM and stiff/dust-balled/worn out floppy drive. But it has a USB card. And I have USB Floppy Drives. So the two (got lucky there only two) disks, tomes really, that couldn't be read were replaced with tomes from a CD of Mac OSes. It would behoove me, now that I begin to remember the issues of working with Old Macs, to have some external SCSI hard drives with OS installers and a generic install of a System fit for the machine being re-installed to.
