The DHCP client in Open Transport can have some difficulties getting a
valid IP lease from some cheaper home/office NAT routers, due to a lame
time-out bug (that was mostly fixed in OS 9.2.2). But that's easily
fixable by using static addressing for that one Mac. Other than that,
there should be NO difficulties using an older Mac with any "modern
router" - using either MacTCP or Open Transport.

The other issue is with the hardware, specifically the network adapter. Most 10 megabit Macintosh ethernet cards don't properly identify their media type.

When they were new, there was but one kind of Ethernet, 10 megabit, half duplex, used by most computers using it. Full duplex 10 megabit was rarely used and 100 megabit didn't yet exist.

That causes problems with many 10/100/1000 megabit switches and routers which rely on media type identification instead of sussing it out from the data transmission. No media type ID, no connection for you!

There are two ways around this. The neat, tidy and more expensive way is with a managed switch where you login to it and configure the speed and other settings for each port.

The cheap way that involves more cables and having to find one more power outlet is to daisy chain a 10 megabit hub between the old Mac and the multi-speed switch or router.

Most 10 megabit hubs do properly identify their media type.

You can also connect a 10 megabit switch to one 100 or 1000 megabit port and connect several old Macs, which won't use up all the bandwidth on that one higher speed port.
