I found this forum from Low-End Mac where I had been searching for info on Mac Quadra 650s. Forgive me for asking stupid questions, but I really am a novice where Macs are concerned.
Several years ago one of my suppliers - a photo lab - liquidated their Macs and bought new machines. I bought this Quadra from them for $50. It came with a 68040 CPU, 1M video RAM, 48M system RAM, a keyboard, mouse, hi-res color monitor, CD and a 1 GB Apple HD that had an OS and some other software installed on it. There was no documentation. I added a StyleWriter 1200, a few cables, a network interface and bought a copy of Claris Works 4 and OS 8, all from eBay or the local computer store. After setup I verified that it booted but never used it for anything; it had no Internet access and all the other machines around were PCs or Commodores. The Mac was a "decoration", if you will. It looked appropriate sitting on a student's desk in a boy's bedroom. Last week in the process of cleaning and such I tried booting the old girl. Nada. That's when I found the low-end Macs site and learned about the 3.6V battery that backs the PRAM. I got to the battery (toast) and found a replacement. The Mac boots once again, and now that I have popped the cover I have become intrigued with the hardware inside. I've got some more RAM on order and a wireless interface so I can connect to the cable modem / wireless router. But I look at the bare slots inside the case and wonder what could go in there. And that's one reason for posting here: Does anyone have any suggestions for NuBus cards that are suitable for use in this Mac? The on-board video can do (at best) 640x480 at "thousands" of colors, but I'm guessing one upgrade would be a video card. What else can go in there? And do I want to upgrade OS 8.0 to 8.1?
