There are three as far as desktops are concerned.

1 is the Rayovac 840, used in 68040 Macs and some 603-based PPCs.  This one
is expensive as **** unless you get 'em from Mike Ford.  What a lot of
people do is find a three-cell AA holder and use the wiring harness from a
dead Rayovac 840 to hook it up, giving them a $1.50 alkaline solution.

2 is the common 3.6V 1/2AA lithium battery, which was used in every other
Mac except...

3 is the 4.5V AA-size battery; I think it's a Rayovac 872.  It was used
only in the Plus and earlier.

Laptops are a different story entirely.
