Analog connections can be slowed markedly by line noise, whether from wind,
lightning, or electrically noisy devices hooked to the line in your house.

I recently had to unplug one noisy modem which caused a crackling on the
line and caused my other modems to connect at about 1/3 of their normal
speed. I don't think noise has as much of an effect on a digital signal.
