Sam,
NO, there is not enough power coming out of the computer to power
speakers. In fact you could damage the computer by connecting to the
stereo jack.
You can buy speakers with a built-in amplifier, designed to mate with
the stereo jack, for not too much. I have a pair for my iBook that
cost $6 new. And I have a three speaker system on my 8100 that cost
$20 new.
Or you can just use a stereo amp and your old speakers. Cabling could
get to be a pain here.
