Hello--
This is my first post here but I've been reading with interest for
some time. After following topics initiated by Jeff Garrison and
Marten regarding the joys of floppy-driven, silent
vintage-Macintoshing, I started playing around with my Pluses. Today
I picked up an LC sans drives, RAM, and VRAM. I borrowed the
necessary parts from my LCII and everything works. All I need to do
now is find parts to replace the borrowed ones and I'm good to go.
Now, when I had the two pizza boxes open, I couldn't help but notice
the similarity between the boards, with the 68020/68030 and lack of a
second floppy connector on the LC II being the only significant
differences I could find. The LC II board has contacts where the
second floppy connector could have been, so is it possible to solder
on a connector and enjoy the same quiet setup I have with the LC, but
with the performance benefits of the 68030? Also, is it safe from a
heat standpoint to disconnect the fan on this computer if I'm not
running a hard drive?
What I really want is a Color Classic, but the second drive would
give the modified LCII a cool advantage over the more RAM-spacious
CC. Just out of curiosity, assuming it's okay to run a dual-floppy
equipped old Mac without a fan, what is the fastest model that could
work in this configuration?
Thanks,
--Matt
