Replacing a motherboard is much more difficult than just sliding a new one 
in. You may have to remove screws, release clips, etc. and then put the new 
board in place and secure it. Once that's done though you probably won't get 
much more performance unless you replace it with a PowerMac board, and I 
doubt any PowerMac boards will work in the LC 520. You can, however, look 
into Micromac's Logic Board Tradeup deal (micromac.com, go to PRODUCTS). They 
will swap your board for a faster 040 board. You'll save money to just buy an 
accelerator and upgrade your RAM.

If the machine is still too slow, your friend is obviously not a Vintage Mac 
person :)
