It could be going South for the Winter. But, it could also just be
dirty. I would try cleaning it first...
It's one of the minor design flaws of the IIci. The floppy drive
has an open back, the auto-insert floppy drive does not have a dust
flap. So, the power supply fan, which blows air out the back, also
sucks air (and dust) in through the floppy drive.
Anyway, try cleaning it. If that doesn't work, new & refurbished
auto-insert super drives can be found from several on-line resources
for around $10-$20.
A manual-insert drive *would* work too... Except the mounting hole
tabs are a slight bit off. The drive would sit about 1/8" high, or,
low (I forget which).
