Your whole story sounds like this drive not being compatible with
later Compacts. Somewhere around the SE FDHD it started getting
problems.
With the Plus it functioned fine.
With your SE FDHD's the results varied: I guess your two FDHD's have
different ROM chips.
With the more recent compacts (SE/30, Classic, Classic II) the floppy
drive failed.
This must be caused by a compatibility problem with the ROM chip.
