Right - and the side-to-side works real well using needlenose
pliers on the black plastic plug only.  
Then when its noticibly looser grab the plug dead center & pull -
but get more meat than just that thin center band of black plastic
at what seems to be a slot designed for a plug removal tool.

Try the squared end of say, a teaspoon handle in that
by creating a minimal-travel lever with your fists stacked.

Figure that one out '!^
