Here's an update. I opened up the SCSI case and stuck a formerly internal 
Apple drive on the connector, set the ID via a jumper, and it worked fine. 
So it's not the case. Hooked it back up to the original drive, used a 
jumper for the ID, and still get the flashy ?. So, looks like the original 
drive is toast or at least the ID setting block is not good.

Anyone got a spare ST-255N? ;)
