The cage is to stop the battery falling out in transit. It has happened 
to me before, I hit an LC (with no cage on the battery) on a door frame 
by accident while I was carrying it up to my room a while back and next 
thing I know the battery is rolling around in the bottom of the case. I 
found that the metal tabs had been bent to make the battery come out 
easier but that's beside to point ;).
