Sounds like DIP (Dual Inline Package) DRAM chips.
256K x 1bit each. 8 of those make up 256 Kilobytes,
9 if it uses parity. If you can find something like
an old PC/AT or other 286 with 1meg onboard, there's
the chips you need. :)

And yes, it's old RAM. First SIPPs then SIMMS came
along around 1984-1985 and began to push out the
individual DIP chips. SIPPs and 30 pin SIMMs have
the same pinout on the connector but SIPPs have
a single row of pins. (The last of the SIPPs were
just SIMMs with pins soldered on.)
