Well it's been a tense hour, but the motherboard of "Green Jade" is out and I haven't fried myself yet. Just in case anyone's curious, you don't have to remove or even touch anything on the CRT or controller circuitry to get the logic board out, just take your time wiggling out the connectors from the board's side and out she comes... eventually. So much for the Apple service manual....
Anyhoo.... my SE/30's got all 8 slots filled with 1Mb SIMMs... I was given 8 4Mb 30 pins SIMMs a month ago - in anticipation of this day - and obviously would like to do the swap. However, the SIMMs came from a 486 PC, not a Mac, so there lies the worry. The SIMMs look very similar; same size, pins line up exactly, same mount-hold holes, the only difference is the number of ICs (the 4Mb has 9, the 1Mb has 8, but with surface pads already marked for a ninth) and the codes on the ICs themselves. The 4Mb reads on each IC: Goldstar GM71C4100AJ70 9323 KOREA (note that the "9232" varies a bit, some of my SIMMs read "9230" or "9245", these ones have silver pin contacts instead of gold) Someone told me a while ago these basically means that they're 5v, 70ns SIMMs. As the SE/30 requires memory 120ns or faster... so theorectically that's OK, though a few people told me otherwise when I asked on a newsgroup some time ago. If anyone could clarify this for me, that'd be great. I'd love to supercharge my little SE though I don't want to kill her. Much too pretty. FYI, the 1Mb SIMMs read: AAA1M300J-07 NMBS 9302 A3 Kind Regards, Ben. -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
