Hello all!

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I've been hunting through the
FAQ and online and haven't been able to find the answer.

I recently picked up an AppleColor RGB display from a thrift store for $10
and bought a DB15 monitor cable for $20 (yes, the cable did cost twice as
much as the monitor!). I am trying to get the display to work with my IIsi
and/or my Performa 636 so I can have an extra display instead of constantly
having to unhook and rehook my regular NEC multisync monitor (which does
work) whenever I want to start one of the older computers up.

I was able to connect both and start them up using the DB15 cable (which was
specifically marked for Mac II to Apple monitor connections). But on both
computers, the display I get, after lots of fiddling with the buttons, is
doubled -- two identical side by side displays, each showing almost (but not
quite) the whole mac desktop, with a thick black bar running down the
center. Any other turn of the buttons produces a screen full of static.

Apart from being squished narrow, both display(s) respond normally -- the
mouse pointer moves and clicks, menus drop down, etc.

Anyone encountered this one before??? Is it a CRT problem? I've tried all
the usual tricks like starting up with the shift key down, to make sure it
is not an obvious software issue. The display is doubled from the moment
the monitor lights up, even before the happy mac appears.

I cannot quite figure out which RGB monitor I have, even after checking
Apple's tech listings, but it says AppleColor RGB on the back and was made
in 1987. Help!

Looking forward to enlightenment,

Sara (new to this repair stuff)
