I believe you need a carrier for the CD-ROM. That is the item actually
called the "caddy". The label on the door is telling you where to insert
the caddy containing the CD-ROM. It looks like an over-sized, see-through
3.5 floppy. My external AppleCD 300 (Family Number: M3023) has the same
door and the same drop-in-the-computer look you describe.

>Ok, perhaps a silly question, but I scored a LC 520

>there is a covered slot named "CD Caddy". SCSI Probe
>says there is a CD-ROM drive in the machine. BUT:
>Apple CD Player tells me it can't find it, and, if I
>attempt to put a CD into the caddy, it looks like it's
>just going to drop in the computer. I opened up the
>back and looked through, and I don't see what I'd
>expect to see if there was a CD drive in there. But
>I'm used to CD drives where there is a button on the
>front, and the tray comes out.
>
>So, is there just something I am missing here? SCSI
>Probe is so sure the drive is installed that it gives
>the model number and everything.
