Bryan, the IIsi was notorious for it's inconsistent sound quality or lack of
sound for that matter. The best way to fix it was to ignore the built-in
speaker and just use external ones. I bought a cheap pair ($10) for mine,
plugged it into the head phone jacks on the back and the sound was fine from
then on.

As to the ROM SIMM, I don't have one in mine and seems to work just fine.
How much RAM do the machines have? I have 64 megs and I started to have
problems when I tried to double it to 128 using ramdoubler.
