As a challenge from an Apple Training Tech here in my town, I put Netscape onto a Quadra 800, andmy hotrod 6100. My impressions are changed.
While I.E. 2.0 and 2.1 are great for the older 68k Macs, due to the annoying Java errors I encounter with Netscape 1.0, 1.1n, and so-on, I.E. was a forced choice. Using I.E. 3.x or 4.x on the Quadra 800, I noticed a slowing of the overall browse experience. Using Netscapes, although some kick my butt with java error buttons to click away, they're peppier. Finally settled on Netscape 4.08 for the Quadra 800 which meant uppingthe O.S. to 7.6.1. The overall response is much faster. Almost like the 6100 with a NewerTech 240Mhz card. In fact, the 6100 now has Netscape 4.76. IT pulls in mail faster, and browses faster although it froze a couple times last night. I may attribute that to the presence of I.E. 5's parts in the system folder. Those ready to discard Netscape, rethink as I have. It really DOES seem overall a better browser for these 68k Macs newer than the IIci. I wanted Opera, but IT wants a PPC. I wanted Cyberdog, but it wanted Open Doc and refused to open and work. I wanted Mozilla. IT wants a PPC. I wanted iCab, but I'll settle. Jeff -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
