hello,
we'd be happy to help lowendmac, or anyone trying to save info that
people can use.
our archive goes back to 1996, but our success collecting large binaries
is spotty.
wayback searches only with urls, not keywords. so you can't search for
'os6', the good news is that you can search 'www.foo.com/downloads*' and
browse everything in that directory or lower.
apple uses a robots.txt file to block a lot of their files in wayback,
but you can search for other sites (you know what sites you want).
try it, and if there's any way we can help, just drop a note,

Subject: too little too late? or no?
I belong to an online mac user group at
http://www.lowendmac.com
and we are trying to amass an online archive of as much vintage mac
software that we can possibly locate. we are hobbyists and restorers of
apple computers going back as far as apple goes. we are constantly
rescuing, refurbishing, trading, selling and coming up with ingenious
ways to use apple computers that even apple never imagined. our main
lament is that so many of the old sites where one could obtain downloads
of the software that worked on our macs, well, they're disappearing or
gone. it hit me today that perhaps in your archiving, that maybe you
saved these sites before they vanished. in effect, we want to do what
you do, but focusing only on apple and macintosh programs. rather than
link to outside sites that are becoming extinct, we want to capture and
save the downloads and info that was actually there when the site was
live, and put them on our own servers and domain name, for mac users to
be able to draw on in our resurrection of macs we save from the
landfills.
how far back in time do your archives go? did you get a good sweep of
what was out there when the web started?? do you think you can help us
with our project?
when people ask us why we bother, our
answer is "because eventually, as time goes by, every mac becomes a low
end mac". and macs have amazing longevity. we have members on 18 year
old machines humming along happily untroubled, alongside today's G4's,
even networked. its a worthy project. and since apple wont do it, its
left to us who care.
what can you tell me?
my discussion list is eagerly awaiting an answer. give us hope!
