An updated hack for up to APPLE Drive Setup version 2.0.7 would be a good thing to have
There is an issue discovered regarding beiung able to swap HFS formatted SCSI hard disks with 680x0 CPU machines; =================== Inqury: Why HFS (not HSF+) formatted 1 GB APPLE/ Quantum OEM SCSI hard disks would be "seen" as larger than 4 GB under Mac OS 7.1 with Update 3? Note: Part of what was wanted on the 68000 CPU machines was 2 GB, and 4 GB external SCSI hard disks partitioned into a Mac OS 6.0.8 boot volume and a Mac OS 7.1 with Update 3 boot volume each, and also to be able hook them up to other SCSI Macs and Power Macs to trade files when desired. >From APPLE: SCSI 4.3 was never implemented for machines which had the 53c80 series of SCSI Controllers. This includes all of the 68000 and 030 machines. While it probably would have been technically possible there wouldn't have been much advantage as those machines didn't have DMA or other hardware which would benefit from the features of 4.3. OTOH newer drivers that supported the larger volumes may have required the 4.3 APIs for other reasons. Large volume support was a feature that was added farily late IIRC and may not have shipped with any releases that were compatible with the older machines (large in this case meant larger than 4 GB). <snip> Apparently there is a patch to the file system which is installed in the partition map of the drive. This is so that if any of the volumes on a Mac are initialized with HFS+ and used to boot an older system that it will work correctly (needs to be in the partition map so that the file manager is fixed before trying to mount the volume when booting). This patch only works on 68040 and PPC Macs. There were a variety of complicated criteria behind how and where the patch got installed and evidently we completely missed the permutation on the older machines...<snip> =================== It may be possible to completely wipe all the drives and use APPLE HDSC Setup 7.3.1 or earlier to format and partition HFS volumes, but it may not work (often hard to unformat/ re-format). -Martin Totusek -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
