here's what I would do, in this order:[ with any new monitor on a mac
II]
make sure the power cord is plugged into either the wall power or the
back of the mac's power. of plugging it into one deosn't give power to
the green LED on the front, plug it into the the other source of power.
wall or mac back.
make sure the db15 jack on the cable is firmly connected into the
monitor port on the back, as per the picture beneath the port.
look carefully around the monitor's shell for the 'on' button and any
contrast, tint, postioning dials or buttons that may be there. panels
can hide these by slick design. snoop, poke, wiggle.
be sure the 'on button' is turned on.
[green LED should come on, on the front somewhere visibly]

be sure the other dials or knobs are set at the midway point, not to
either extreme they can be turned to.

if all this is in place, NOW turn on your mac and wait for it to boot.
listen for the happy chimes.

if it boots, give it a little time to finish and present itself to you
as good to go..
with a color monitor, it might come up greyscale the first time you wake
it up. if the machine boots , go into the monitors control panel and
select color. depending on how much VRAM you have , you may get 256
colors, thousands or millions.

know whether you are limited to onboard VRAM, onboard RAM, or if you
have a videocard installed. know if it's Nubus, or PDS adapted. know if
it does color or greyscale or B&W.
if you are using a videocard, be sure you attached the monitor cable to
it, back when you were hooking up the power and the monitor cord in the
back of the unit.
 read labels, match icons.

if all goes well, you'll get a lit screen with a readable display,
either greyscaled or color. the first time with any monitor, it'll
usually revert to greyscale and wait for you to set color in the monitor
control panel..
you can get black if the contrast dial is turned too far to one end of
its complete range of turn. put it at the midway point of its turn.

by this point you should be getting some kind of results. if you aren't,
i leave it to better minds than me to pick up from here.
