I don't think the onboard video of that model is set up for more than 16-bit color regardless of monitor. According to GURU, the standard 512K of VRAM gets you thousands at 512x384 and 256 or 16 at higher resolutions. Upping the VRAM to 1M gets you thousands at 512x384, 640x480 and 832x624, and 256 at the higher modes. My Quadra 605 behaves this way.
