Try writing down the exact error message (or Apple-Shift-3 to screen 
capture it) and then report back here what the message is.  While 
Bryan is right that this could be the basic problem caused by not 
having a valid network connection there is also a condition I've 
encountered that produces a similar sounding error message but is 
really a software corruption problem.
