hey - that's pretty cool! i'm trying to remember my exchange rates... about
120 yen to the dollar last i checked. so that's about $80. mmm... about 3
times what i paid for the 170, with shipping. ;-)

i figure that if i can't find at least an 80M 2.5" SCSI drive for less than
$15 with shipping, it's pointless. i'll hack a solution with a larger drive
in that case.

well, i picked-up a couple of the HD-30 SCSI adaptor cables in the meantime.
one terminates at a centronics 50 pin and the other, a 25 pin DIN i think.
just have to look into the particulars... e.g. whether i can boot off an
external device, etc.

re: the individual who suggested i run diags from boot floppies... a very
good idea. i'll peruse some of the software depots i've come across in my
research and see if i can find these. i'm fairly new to macs, in terms of
hardware hacking.

re: OS 7.1 - thanks for the heads-up. will do.

regards,

christopher

<<2.5" SCSI drives topped out around the 500 megabyte
mark. Apple was just about the only consumer for them.

There are new "SCSI" drives available that are
actually IDE drives with a super tiny 2.5" IDE to
2.5" SCSI connector converter attached. The problem
there would be finding one with a small enough
capacity, ie, 2gig or less. I don't know if the
converter can be bought by itself. It's more than just
a pin to pin thing, the data and signal stuff has
to be converted too.>>
