i have the schematic, if interested you can contact me off list.  it's easy, and 
polarity doesn't matter
as only transitions are sensed.  you use the 2nd and 4th wires of a 4 wire jack on the 
phone wire side.
there's a 50 ohm 1:1 transformer hooked to the phone wires, the other side goes 
directly to the serial
output lines and to the serial input lines through a 1k resistor in series with each 
line on the
computer side.  i've taken them apart and found the info at ti.com in one of their 
application notes for
their chips.  they are however very widely available.  if you only want to connect 2 
machines, you can
actually also use a printer cable to directly connect the two macs even if you are 
using appletalk.
