The IIfx and the IIci would definitely be the best choices in the System 6-capable area. You may decide not to choose one of those two, though, based on cost and/or size (the IIfx would be a lot of money to ship if you bought it on eBay). If you need a third choice, I would actually suggest an LC (not an LC II or III), even though LowEndMac declared it a Road Apple. Though it is essentially a repackaging of the Mac II (it has a 68020), it's small, usually very cheap (free from schools getting rid of old computers!), and VERY easy to get inside and add a larger hard drive to. I would think it would be fast enough to play System 6 games. It's fast enough to play mine. (Anyone for "Banzai!"?) One other thing worth mentioning is how hard I found it to connect one of these older machines to a modern monitor. I found through experimentation that an LC has a much easier time connecting to a VGA monitor using a typical Mac-to-VGA adaptor than the IIci. A lot of those adaptors have just a two-position switch, and the lower one usually works for an LC. However, for the IIci, I had to dig out one of those adaptors that has ten DIP switches, and then look up a matrix online for what their settings mean. After much trial and error I found turning 1, 4 and 5 on and leaving the rest off got the IIci to sync with my VGA monitor at 640x480. These machines even had problems with regular Macintosh monitors. Neither would sync to a MultipleScan 15, MultipleScan 14, or a Macintosh 16" Color. And the LC wouldn't sync to a 1991 model Apple 12" High Resolution RGB, which still baffles some of us. Of course, with a IIfx, you have to use a NuBus video card, so your ability to connect it to any monitor depends entirely on the card. -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
