OK, so I've had suggestions for the following: -Run the IIci with NetBSD instead of System 7; -Find an older version of NetPresenz; -Use NCSA Telnet (or ANSI Telnet, Better Telnet?) to allow one anonymous user; -Use Hotline Server and have people connect with the Hotline client; -Search Tucows for more possibilities.
Cameron said he thought I sounded desperate- truth is I'm just really surprised. It isn't that big a deal to me if it can't be done. It's just that I've been hearing and reading those recommendations to turn old Macs into FTP servers for a long time, from everyone from Low End Mac to MacAddict, but I've never found any info on actually how to do it. As it turns out, Pickle's suggestion to find an old version of NetPresenz was the way to go- back then as well as today. When I saw it on VersionTracker, I had originally ruled it right out because of its $75 price. I didn't realize until I looked into it that Stairways only recently upped the price (without releasing a new version!), and that the $10 shareware version is still widely available on the net. I didn't have to look long to find it online, and then I was also able to finally find some rather online articles that mentioned NetPresenz specifically as what to use to set-up an FTP server. Installing it may be another matter. I'm not sure yet how the software will run without a license code. Maybe it'll just nag me every time I launch it. Or maybe it'll only run for a certain number of days, or a certain number of transfer sessions, before disabling itself, in which case I don't know if I'll be able to register it for $10. Certainly, if it can still be done now, Stairways won't continue to let it be for long. I guess my point is: To everyone all over the world who advocates the continuing use of vintage Macs, scratch "cheap FTP server" off the list of practical uses. -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
